- Artificially created hole in the abdomen so that faces can still be eliminated, usually done after colon cancer, bowel necrosis or IBD.
- A colonostomy is a procedure that links colon to the skin of the abdominal wall (L)
- Ileostomy connects the last part of the small intestine to the abdominal wall (R)
- Stoma may be permanent or temporary to allow the bowel to recover from inflammation, infection etc. If temporary, a subsequent operation is needed to reattach the bowel
Management of stoma at home
- Referral to stoma nurse/ AU council of stoma association for education and advice on different types of colostomy bags, skin sealants, skin barriers and powders etc
- Important to keep skin around stoma clean, change bags frequently, irrigate stoma to prevent constipation
- Reduce odors by reducing gas formation such as eating small frequent meals, limit foods such as cabbage, onions, beans, fizzy drinks; and taking charcoal or anti-flatulent meds
- Eat a low-residue diet for first couple of months to promote healing, avoid certain foods such as popcorn or seeds
- 3/12 post op - no diet restrictions
- GP to follow up and address any depression, body image, sexuality or other concerns
