- Non accidental use of physical force against a child that results in harm to the child
- Does NOT need to have intent to harm
Clinical feaatures
- Cutaneous injuries
- Any bruising <4mo (non-mobile)
- Bruising to trunk/ ear/ neck in <4y
- Bruises to areas that are traditionally not first point of contact in accidents
- Fractures
- Rarely they are able to have enough force to cause a self-fracture
- <18mo, long bone #
- All rib, metaphyseal, vertebral, pelvic, mandibular, scapular, sternal and acromion #
- Multiple #
- Head trauma
- SDH
- Retinal haemorrhage (peripheral more indicative of NAI)
