Bipolar I Disorder (↑/↨)
- Disorder in which ≥ 1 manic or mixed episode has occurred
- Disorder in which there is ≥ 1 MDE and ≥ 1 hypomanic episode
- No past manic or mixed episodes

Epidemiology
- Prevalence: 0.6-0.9%; M:F = 1:1
- Age of onset: teens to 20's
Risk Factors
- 60-65% of bipolar patients have family history of major mood disorders

Treatment
Non-pharmacological
- CBT
- Social: vocational rehabilitation, leave of absence from school/work, drug and EtOH cessation, social skills training, education for family members
Pharmacological
- Mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, antidepressants, ECT
- 250mg BD lithium + 2mg Risperidone nocte (adjunct)
- Diazepam controls symptoms but doesn't solve problem
