- Most common cause of seizure in children
- 3-5% of all children, M>F
- Age 6 months-6 yrs
Aetiology
- Fever
Management
- Note the time, do nothing else
- Reassurance
- Febrile seizures do not cause brain damage
- Recurrence rate: Younger the child, greater the risk
- Same risk as general population in developing epilepsy
- Antipyretics (e.g. paracetamol) and fluids for comfort (though neither prevent seizure)
- Treat cause of fever
- If complex, consult with paediatric team
Prognosis

- Epilepsy FHx
- Neurodevelopmental problem
- Atypical febrile convulsions aka epilepsy (prolonged or focal)
Chances of developing epilepsy
- No risk factors: 1% (same as population risk)
- 1 risk factor: 2%
- >1 risk factor: 10%
